Makoto Shinkai Next Film with Post-Apocalyptic Theme
Shinkai wrote that despite some difficulties, he has been working every day on the storyboard for his new film. After receiving a lot of feedback from numerous people, he is currently making some improvements: “I want to make a movie that people can enjoy.”
In December 2020, Shinkai stated that he started working on the script of the new project at the time when the Japanese government declared the first COVID-19 emergency. According to the company, the new evening filler deals with the theme “What happens after the end?”
In the story, the content of which has not yet been specifically revealed, something so important is supposed to happen that no power alone will be able to affect it. “I want some of the people watching this movie to think, ‘Somehow we’re going to get through this, aren’t we?'”
In terms of the COVID-19 pandemic, the director anticipates that humanity will experience many other forms of disaster over the decades. “Many things come to an end or change dramatically, but people will always find ways to survive.”
“Right now, I want to make a film that shows what happens after the apocalypse,” Shinkai stated in an earlier interview, adding, “I want to show things we face after the world ends.” Further details have yet to be released.
