Blue Exorcist is a dark fantasy anime that is based on a manga series of the same name. Written and illustrated by Kazue Katou, the manga series was first published on April 4, 2009. It became very popular in Japan and was picked up by A-1 Pictures to be made into an anime TV series.
Blue Exorcist is one of the most popular anime. What’s great about this anime is that it manages to follow the magic from start to finish. It is often believed that anime adapted from the original source often does better than anime that creates its own original stories. Blue Exorcist is living proof that anime can change. For the better, if only it sticks to its source material.
Blue Exorcist/Ao No Exorcist Manga Author Interview
In a July 2016 interview with ANN and Comicsverse, the author Kazue Kato of the manga Ao No Exorcist talked about anime and manga. The difficulties to maintain the heavy production schedule for the manga. She said
“It’s very difficult. I ask for one month off a year, but in Japan, it’s standard for serializations to go on continuously without breaks, so they don’t take that very well. Sorry for taking off! I’m serialized in a monthly magazine and barely make it work, so I have a lot of respect for authors who do weekly serializations. They often sacrifice their health and their private lives to do it. It’s a job that only a chosen few who have the skill and the fortitude, both mental and physical, can do. I’m definitely not one of them.”Kazue Kato
Update: On Jun 29, 2021, The manga entered into hiatus in Jump SQ until next year’s Issue #5 out in April 2022. The series will be on break while the mangaka draws a short-term serialization, which will start in September this year, Jump SQ Issue #10.
ANN, asked So do you have an ending in mind right now? Or is it going to run forever and ever?
There’s a couple patterns right now for the ending, and we’re hoping one of those will solidify eventually. Of those patterns, sometimes it’s just like ‘Oh, that’s not going to work.’ So that gets deleted.Kazue Kato
Comicsverse, asked Did you expect the series to be as successful as it was as a manga, and then as an anime?
I had no idea! At the time, I think I was pretty sure it would get canned.Kazue Kato
Blue Exorcist Season 3 Release Date: When will it be released?
Season 1 of “Blue Exorcist” premiered on April 17, 2011 and with a total of 25 episodes, it aired on October 2, 2011. Despite several familiar shounen archetypes, the anime was very well received. As of November 2016, nearly 15 million copies of its original manga material were in circulation. Due to its worldwide success and mostly favorable reviews, it was renewed for a brand new season, which premiered on January 17, 2019 and ended on March 25, 2017, with 12 episodes. The second season was released in the United States on Netflix on September 1, 2020.
As for the third season, considering only the popularity of the anime, it has a good chance of returning. Compared to the original manga, the second season covers up to 34 chapters (almost 9 volumes) in 12 episodes. The good news is that the manga already has a total of 25 volumes published, which suggests that a lot of source content is still available for not just one but several seasons. So, in a situation where the anime is renewed for season 3, we can expect its storyline to pick up from chapter 35 of volume 9.
However, since A-1 Pictures (“Sword Art Online”, “86 Season 2“) has not made any announcement regarding its release, fans will have to wait for the news to become official. Because it took the studio almost six years to release season 2, it is possible that the creators will take a similar break before releasing the third installment; unless another anime studio takes over. So, if everything goes well, we can expect Blue Exorcist season 3 to be released in 2023 or 2024. All the official news about its release will be updated here. Until then, you can check other similar shounen anime.
Blue Exorcist/Ao no Exorcist Season 3: What will be the plot
The story of the Blue Exorcist Season 3 will most likely begin from the 35th chapter of the manga, which marks the beginning of “Illuminati Arc“. Somewhere around the final moments of Season 2, Rin and the crew return to Kyoto. Season 2 will continue the story from here and will probably start with another of those shounen beach episodes par excellence. But somewhere in the context of these light episodes, a new threat from the Illuminati conspiracy group will begin to emerge. Adding more weight to this new arc is the fact that Saburota Todou, who was defeated by Rin’s brother in Season 2, was working with the same group.
Blue Exorcist Storyline
Blue Exorcist takes place in a fantastic setting and consists of a two-dimensional world: Assiah, which is the material world in which humans live. And Gehenna, a world of demons led by Satan. Although travel between the two worlds is usually impossible, demons can pass through Assiah if they possess a living being. Given the possibility of demons passing through Assiah, humans for millennia have trained exorcists. A group of specialists under the direct command of the Vatican who excel in the hunt and murder of demons.
In this context, the anime follows a teenager named Rin Okumura. Although Rin is a seemingly ordinary teenager. His world is turned upside down when he learns that he is the son of Satan, the leader of the demon world. When Satan attempted to invade Assiah by possessing Rin’s father, Shirou Fujimoto, possession killed him. Leaving Rin and her twin brother Yukio alone in the world.
Enraged by Satan’s actions and eager to avenge the death of their father, Rin. And Yukio then decides to become an exorcist, hoping to kill Satan one day. To achieve their ambitions, they joined the True Cross Academy and trained to become exorcists and join the Knights of the Holy Cross.
However, this journey is far from easy. Not only does Rin have to face the academic pressure of the Academy of the True Cross. And to his troublesome peers, but he must also keep his true identity and demonic powers hidden from people. Things are all the more complicated because there are many malefactors who want to use Rin’s powers for their own ends.
