SAO: Progressive: Film Successfully Launched in Japan

After its first weekend, the first “Sword Art Online: Progressive” film, which opened in 196 Japanese theaters on October 30, 2021, secured the top position in the box office. This is reported by the Japanese website Oricon News, which also gave the first figures.

SAO: Progressive: 225,000 Tickets Sold so far

According to the report, around 225,000 tickets were sold for the film on October 30 and 31, 2021. Thus, this grossed about 349 million yen (about 2.6 million euros) and is behind the film “Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale,” which took in circa 425 million yen (about 3.2 million euros) in 2017 on the first two days with 308,376 tickets sold.

“Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale” grossed more than 4.3 billion yen (about 32.5 million euros) worldwide during its entire theatrical run, including 2.52 billion yen (about 19.1 million euros) in Japan, while the remaining revenue was split between China, the U.S. and 23 other countries.

“Sword Art Online: Progressive” is a more detailed retelling of the “Aincrad” arc, which includes some sections that did not appear in the original series. The first film is scheduled to launch soon in over 40 countries and territories. A second film has been announced for 2022.
