The Japanese website Record China recently reported that the anime adaptation of Saga of Tanya the Evil (jap.: “Youjo Senki”) has sparked a controversy in China.
Saga of Tanya the Evil: Anime a degradation of China
On September 15, 2021, an article appeared on the US-based Chinese website Duowei News criticizing the anime “Saga of Tanya the Evil” as “militaristic” on the Chinese Internet and condemning it for allusions to the Nanking incident.
The discussion was sparked by a verified user of the social media platform Weibo, who was outraged that the anime is available on legal providers such as Tencent Video and iQIYI in China, although this would “glorify militarism and degrade China.”
The Duowei News article shared these views, adding that the two speakers Saori Hayami (Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakov) and Haruka Tomatsu (Mary Sioux) also participated in the series “The Irregular at Magic High School”, which is also an insult to China.
In addition, the speaker Aoi Yuuki (Tanya Degretschow) has already advertised “Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie” in Nazi-like military clothing, thus stirring up the military feeling of the Japanese.
A second season of “Saga of Tanya the Evil” is currently in the works. A start date for the sequel is still pending at the current time.
