Labeled as one of the best boys-love anime out there, fans of the series have been waiting for Junjou Romantica Season 4 for a long time. It first aired in 2018, and since then, the series has earned an excellent reputation among anime lovers, especially in the LGBTQ community.
There are so many reasons why this show has become popular, even for people who love romance anime in general. Junjou Romantica (Official Website) has diverse and colorful characters. The story might have familiar troupes like any heterosexual romance anime, showing a relationship between two people. But, it takes a unique approach and has a positive depiction of homosexual relationships. Pretty arts by Studio Deen has also grabbed fans’ attention, for it complements the rom-com genre in the series.
Therefore, it’s not a surprise if fans are still anticipating Junjou Romantica Season 4, even after the last season finished airing six years ago. Will it happen? Here is everything we know about it.
Will there be Junjou Romantica Season 4?
So far, Studio Deen has not announced anything regarding Junjou Romantica Season 4. However, it could be happening anytime soon.
We need to look at the history of the series. The anime’s first season aired on April 11 until June 27, 2008, while the second installment premiered on October 12 and finished on December 28, 2008. Both of the seasons are listed with 12 episodes. It then took Studio Deen seven years to pick the series again.
Yes, you read it right. The third season of Junjou Romantica had been green-lit in 2014 before it premiered in 2015. Between the second and third season, there was also an OVA released with the limited edition of volume 16 in 2012.
The long gap certainly gives us the light of hope. It’s been six years now, so we could probably see Junjou Romantica Season 4 in 2022.
The next best thing is the source material. Junjou Romantica is an anime adaption from the manga of the same name, written by Shungiku Nakamura. By 2021, Shungiku has published 25 volumes, and the manga is still running. So the lack of materials is not a problem for Studio Deen (Sakamoto Desu Ga & Sankarea).
Junjou Romantica Season 4 Release Date
The possibilities are high, but, as we said before, there is still no official statement about the release date of Junjou Romantica Season 4. Looking into Studio Deen’s schedule through MAL, there is only one anime they will handle next year, which is Sasaki to Miyano. You might find it interesting because, just like Junjou Romantica, it is a boys-love anime. So adding one more boys-love anime into their schedule might not be so weird for Studio Deen.
Well, we also need to look at the pandemic situation in Japan too. If it is not going to get better, Junjou Romantica Season 4 might be delayed to 2023.
We can’t be sure about the specific release date, but keep your eyes open for this series!

Junjou Romantica: Action
Junjo Romantica: Pure Romance is a Boys love series by Shungiku Nakamura. It focuses on four storylines: the main couple, which comprises the bulk of the books, and three other male couples that provide ongoing side stories (“Junjo Egoist”, “Junjo Terrorist”, and “Junjo Mistake”). It has expanded into several CD-dramas, a manga series running in Asuka Ciel, a light novel series titled “Junai Romantica” running in The Ruby magazine, and a 37-episode anime series.
High school student Misaki Takahashi returns home to see his older brother being fondled by an unknown man. Bewildered by such a sight, Misaki finds out that the stranger is actually Akihiko Usami, a popular novelist and his brother’s best friend. With the two of them slowly becoming acquainted, Akihiko ends up as Misaki’s private tutor. However, after stumbling upon the author’s latest boys-love novel, Misaki becomes uncertain whether or not to trust Akihiko regarding his friendship with the student’s brother.
Elsewhere, Hiroki Kamijou, a university teacher of classical literature and Akihiko’s friend, is grieving a failed romance. While on the edge of a mental breakdown, he meets student Nowaki Kusama, who wants his help for an upcoming exam. Despite denying Nowaki’s request numerous times, Hiroki eventually lends him a hand. As the two get closer, more revelations about the student are made.
Furthermore, when wealthy teenager Shinobu Takatsuki finds out that his older sister has divorced Hiroki’s coworker You Miyagi, he immediately wants to date the same man—as he saved Shinobu from a robbery three years prior. Even so, You does not feel the same way and attempts to scare him off. However, the educator soon realizes that Shinobu will do anything for their destined romance.
Junjou Romantica collects three love stories, narrating every couple’s romance.
