Drifters Season 2: Everything We Know

Drifters Season 2

If you like Hellsing, then you probably know or already watch Drifters. The action fantasy series is written and illustrated by the same author, Kouta Hirano. The serialization began in April 2009, published in Shounen Gahosha’s magazine, Young King Ours. Kouta teased his new work in the final volume of Hellsing Ultimate in 2012 with a four minutes trailer.

The series gained so much popularity that it was nominated twice for the Manga Taishou Award. Its fourth volume even topped Oricon’s weekly manga ranking charts when it was released in 2014.

So, it was not a surprise when Drifters got anime adaption as a part of the 70th-anniversary celebration of its publisher. To make it more special, it also has its production studio, called Hoods Drifters Studio.

Since it was announced in 2016, Drifters Season 2 seems like it will not happen soon. So what is going on with the series? Here is everything we know about it.

Will there be Drifters Season 2?

Drifters Season 2

So far, we know that Drifters is going to have the sequel. The first season of the anime adaption premiered on October 7, 2016, listed with 12 episodes. When the last episode aired on December 12, 2016, Drifters Season 2 was announced.

“See You Again, Tokyo 20XX” was the message of the said announcement.

Five years later and we don’t have any updates on it. So, sadly, for now, we can only wait.

Drifters Season 2 Release Date

Unfortunately, there is no official release date for Drifters Season 2. Because of the announcement back in 2016, we could assume that it’s not canceled. However, 20XX can be any year, so we probably need a longer time to see the light of it, especially when there is a lack of content.

To this date, Kouta Hirano published only six-volume of Drifters. However, from what we know, the first season covered up to four volumes. But, then, there are three OVA episodes, which were released in 2017 and 2018. Those three episodes adapted most of the fifth volume. So, the lack of source material could be the reason why we can’t watch Drifters Season 2 yet.

Plot of Drifters

The story follows Toyohisa Shimazu, a rearguard who is on the brink of death because of the wound that he got at the Battle of Sekigahara. When Toyohisa tries to walk away from the battlefield, he suddenly gets transferred into another place, a modern corridor that consists hundreds of doors. Besides the doors, there is also a stoic, bespectacled man named Murasaki. The man then led Toyohisa to the nearest door and found himself in a parallel world.

There, Toyohisa meets with warriors from his old world but different eras. Those warriors were presumed dead, and now they are called Drifters. Among them are Nasu no Yoichi and the infamous warlord Nobunaga Oda, who is befriending Toyohisa quickly. Besides Drifters and native humans, the new world also contains many fantastical races, such as elves, dwarves, and hobbits.

However, like Toyohisa’s old world, this new world is at war, between humans and a group called the Ends. The group wants to take over the world and annihilate all the Drifters. Against them is the Octobrist Organization, a group of magicians that wish to bring together Drifters to save the world from the hand of Ends.

Toyohisa is voiced by Yuuichi Nakamura (Osomatsu-san), while Naoya Uchida (Hunter x Hunter (2011)) plays as Oda. Additional casts include Mitsuki Saiga (Nabari no Ou) as Nasu, Shiho Kokido (Sekkou Boys) as Olmine, and Masakazu Nishida (Gunslinger Stratos: The Animation) as Kafeto.

Drifters Season 1 is directed by Kenichi Suzuki (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken (2012)) and Ryouji Nakamori (Hellsing Ultimate) served as character design.
