Will there ever be Darker Than Black Season 3? Will we ever get to see it?
Darker Than Black is one of the many original gems that has successfully stood out ever since it was first introduced to the world. As the title suggests, the show belongs to the mystery, action, and Sci-Fi genres. The story takes place in Tokyo after the great event called ‘Heaven’s War’ has ended. In this world, there are people blessed with special powers called Contractors, and Hei is one of them. Darken Than Black follows Hei and his comrades as they undertake espionage and assassination missions directed by the Syndicate, a mysterious organization.
As mentioned earlier, Darker Than Black began life as an original anime series produced by Bones, the studio best known for its popular anime releases such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, My Hero Academia, Noragami, and last but not least, Mob Psycho. Bones has also released other original gems besides Darker Than Black such as SK8 the Infinity.
Darker Than Black Season 3 Renewal Status
The anime series Darker Than Black first premiered on April 6, 2007, and ran for twenty-five episodes before concluding on September 28 of the same year. A single special episode was later released a year later on March 26. It can be considered the twenty-sixth episode, as it is a side story that takes place during the events of the main series. It was later followed by a second season entitled ‘Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor’ that ran for twelve episodes from October 9, 2009 to December 25, 2009. After the release of the second season, just like the first, Bones released another special episode on January 27, 2010. This time, they released not one, but four episodes.
Darker Than Black went quite successfully at the time of its release, as it was once awarded as the Best Original Anime of The Year by GoGoplex, a popular magazine for teens. More than a decade has passed since the latest release of Darker Than Black, and even until now, many fans are still craving to see a season renewal. So, what is the current status of the franchise?
Although it has been over more than a decade since the special series ‘Gaiden’, Bones have yet to say anything about a season renewal. But even so, the series has not been canceled by the studio. The only thing that we know at this point is that Funimation Entertainment, the North American distributor for the anime, announced that they will no longer hold the license for the first season on January 21, 2016.
Darker Than Black Season 3: Will it be possible?
Unfortunately, the chance of Darker Than Black Season 3 to be happening would be close to nil. The main reason is that the second season was not well received by many fans. While the reason for the hate may vary, they stated that the ending was so confusing that it would be nearly impossible for the studio to come up with a continuation from where it has left off. And since the special series ‘Gaiden’ takes place between the timeline of the first and second season, fans have yet to see a genuine ending to their beloved series.
However, Bones could easily make a new season based on the manga series ‘Darker than Black: Jet Black Flower’. But once again, it would not be feasible, as the story of the manga series occurs after the first season and is an alternative story to the second season and the special episode.
With that being said, due to the amount of hate that the second season has received, Darker Than Black Season 3 would be nearly impossible. Also, the fact that Bones have yet to announce anything regarding a new sequel itself is a red light for the future of the anime series. Not to mention, Bones’ schedules are packed, and they will more likely focus on newer projects such as Bungou Stray Dogs Season 4, and Mob Psycho Season 3.
At the end of the day, take this with as much salt as you want. As low as the chance might be, anything could easily happen these days. Even some old shows that have been out for decades received a new sequel recently. So, don’t lose hope just yet.
Darker Than Black Action
It has been 10 years since Heaven’s Gate appeared in South America and Hell’s Gate appeared in Japan, veiling the once familiar night sky with an oppressive skyscape. Their purposes unknown, these Gates are spaces in which the very laws of physics are ignored. With the appearance of the Gates emerged Contractors, who, in exchange for their humanity, are granted supernatural abilities.
In the Japanese city surrounding Hell’s Gate, Section 4 Chief Misaki Kirihara finds herself at odds with an infamous Contractor codenamed Hei. Called “Black Reaper” in the underground world, Hei, like his associates, undertakes missions for the mysterious and ruthless Syndicate while slowly peeling back the dark layers covering a nefarious plot that threatens the very existence of Contractors.
From the mind of Tensai Okamura comes a sci-fi thriller taking the form of a subtle exposé on a war in which political positions and justice have no sway—a war waged exclusively in the shadows.
