Andre Nemec, one of the showrunners of the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, said in an interview with “Entertainment Weekly” that the upcoming Netflix series is an “extension of the canon” that would add new stories.
Cowboy Bebop: New insights into the existing world
Nemec explained that the live-action implementation is not a complete remake, as “a simple remake of the anime would make the audience hungry for something they’ve already seen.” The anime did a good job, but a pure copy would have been disappointing.
“I promise never to take away the original anime from the purists,” he assured, saying he was excited about the new stories. “I think we’ve done a good job of not violating the canon, but offering new insights into an already existing world.”
He added, “The poetic nature of the anime has allowed us to explore the archetypal nature of the characters and deepen the stories we wanted to explore and answer some questions that the anime leaves open.”
Commenting on the character Spike Spiegel, he said: “Spike is a laconic character, but this kind emphasizes a dark past and a certain pain.” In the anime, he is a broken-hearted cowboy who swings his pistols and knocks funny one-liners, but “there must be something more behind the person.”
Nemec revealed that he became aware of the anime through the “electric, funky jazzy music” of “cowboy bebop” composer Yoko Kanno on the radio, who also participated in the live-action series. Shinichiro Watanabe, director of the anime, was on hand as a consultant.
The show, which will initially consist of ten episodes, will be released worldwide on November 19, 2021 on Netflix. A sequel in the form of a second season is already planned.
