Citrus is a yuri manga series written and illustrated by Saburouta. It was serialized in Ichijinsha’s Comic Yuri Hime from November 2012 to August 2018. A 12 episode anime series adaptation by Passione aired from January to March 2018. Fans have been wondering if they will ever see Citrus Season 2.
During the summer of her freshman year of high school, Yuzu Aihara’s mother remarried, forcing her to transfer to a new school. To a fashionable socialite like Yuzu, this inconvenient event is just another opportunity to make new friends, fall in love, and finally experience a first kiss.
Unfortunately, Yuzu’s dreams and style do not conform with her new ultrastrict, all-girls school, filled with obedient shut-ins and overachieving grade-skippers. Her gaudy appearance manages to grab the attention of Mei Aihara, the beautiful and imposing student council president, who immediately proceeds to sensually caress Yuzu’s body in an effort to confiscate her cellphone.
Thoroughly exhausted from her first day, Yuzu arrives home and discovers a shocking truth: Mei is actually her new step-sister! Though Yuzu initially tries to be friendly with her, Mei’s cold shoulder routine forces Yuzu to begin teasing her.
But before Yuzu can finish her sentence, Mei forces her to the ground and kisses her, with Yuzu desperately trying to break free. Once done, Mei storms out of the room, leaving Yuzu to ponder the true nature of her first kiss, and the secrets behind the tortured expression in the eyes of her new sister.
Citrus Season 2: Will It Return?
Citrus Season 2 Release Date
Unfortunately, Studio Passione has not renewed Citrus for Season 2 yet.
Despite having a huge fan base for the Yuri series, the anime adaptation received low ratings and a couple of not-so-favorable critical reviews on IMDB and MyanimeList.
Hence, this may discourage the studio from coming up with a follow-up season.
Studio Passione is also notable in making only one-season anime titles, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they decide to follow the same path for Citrus. However, fans shouldn’t lose hope yet. There’s always a chance for the studio to change their minds if they receive enough demand from fans.
Are There Enough Materials for Citrus Season 2?
Season 1 ended with the fourth volume of the original manga series, so there is a possibility that season two will pick up from there.
The original manga series has ten volumes in total, leaving us with six more volumes to explore. Citrus’s original manga series concluded in October 2018, but another possible source material has been created for the beloved Japanese Yuri.
Mangaka Saburouta has created a spin-off manga series Citrus Plus which was released in 2019. Citrus Plus was a huge hit. With plenty of source materials available, fans remain hopeful that the anime adaptation will have season 2 in the future.
