Banana Fish, A Quick Recap
Banana Fish starts with the story of Aslan Jade Callenreese or mostly known as Ash Lynx, was a runaway kid that was picked off the streets of New York City and was raised by an infamous godfather of the mafia named Dino Golzine.
Few years later, Ash is 17 years old and is taking care of his severely mentally unstable brother, Griffin Callenreese. He has a hideout in an underground bar and one day, he met a mortally wounded man who gives him a vial of unknown substance and address before dying after muttering the word “banana fish.” The word muttered by the man is the same word muttered by Griffin after his return from the Iraq War.
Ash begins to investigate the truth behind Banana Fish with the help of Shunichi Ibe and Eiji Okumura, who are Japanese photographers reporting on American Street Gangs. Unfortunately, the investigation was held back when Shorter Wong, a gang leader who controls Chinatown, warns Ash about Dino Golzine sending his men to go after him in his hideout. Chaos ensues and Dino’s men successfully kidnap Skip and Eiji. Now, Ash has to rescue his new friends from the clutches of the mafia while also finding out the truth about Banana Fish.
Will There Be Banana Fish Season 2?
It has been two years since the initial anime has ended. Banana Fish is an anime produced by Aniplex, Dentsu, Movic, Fuji TV and Shogakukan with Mappa Studios as the animator. It’s a 24 episodes anime that runs from July 6, 2018 to December 21, 2018. It is adapted from a shoujo manga written and illustrated by Akimi Yoshida.
Banana Fish was first released in a monthly manga magazine called Bessatsu Shoujo Comic from 1985 to 1994. There are in total nineteen volumes of the manga and it finished its serialization on September 26, 1994. North American publisher Viz Media licensed the manga and published an English translated version from 1999 to 2002. Due to the popularity of the manga after the anime release, Viz Media re-released the series in 2018.
There hasn’t been any news regarding the second season of Banana Fish from Mappa or the author alike. Though the anime has completely serialized the entirety of Banana Fish in the span of 24 episodes, there is an unlikely chance that Banana Fish will return to the screen again. But it is too early to deduce that as Banana Fish successfully bridges audiences from the shoujo manga and the shonen manga with its compelling storytelling.
So far, the anime has an impressive rating of 8.51 among more than 200,000 members in MyAnimeList and is ranked 104 on Top Anime page, sitting on 226 in overall popularity. There are differences between the anime and the manga, most notably is adding modern references like the use of smartphones and substituting the Vietnam War with the Iraq War.
Banana Fish Season 2 Release Date
As stated above, Mappa studios has yet to mention the possibility of season 2 just yet. The first season of Banana Fish features four pieces of theme music, opening “lost and found” by Survive Said The Prophet is used from episodes 1 to 13 with the ending titled “Prayer X” by King Gnu. From episode 14 to 24, the opening theme is titled “Freedom” by Blue Encount and “Red” by Survive Said The Prophet as the ending theme.
In conclusion, the release for season 2 of Banana Fish is not definitive or announced just yet. Though if they really do renew the series, chances are that they would have to come up with an original idea or use the side stories that Akimi Yoshida has written and was already adapted into audio dramas. Regardless, Banana Fish is one of the anime that fans and critics really enjoyed, while it might be a hopeful wish to have the season be renewed, it might be possible if fans show their enthusiasm over the series through petitions and talking about it online.
