The streaming service Netflix announced that the film Aya to Majo will be available on demand worldwide outside of Japan and the USA from 18 November 2021. Already a few months ago, this was available for a short time due to an error.
Aya and the Witch Film was made at Studio Ghibli
Aya and the Witch was produced at Studio Ghibli under the direction of director Goro Miyazaki (The Chronicles of The Earth’s Lake). Hayao Miyazaki was responsible for the planning and development, while Toshio Suzuki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, acted as producer. The screenplay was written by Keiko Niwa (Memories of Marnie) and Emi Gunji.
The TV film, which has a running time of 82 minutes, is based on the novel Earwig and the Witch by British author Diana Wynne Jones. The Japanese premiere of Ghibli’s first evening filler, produced entirely in 3DCG, took place on December 30, 2020.

Aya grows up in an orphanage in the British countryside and has no idea that her mother has magical powers. Her life changes dramatically when a strange couple takes her in and she is forced to live with a selfish witch.
The headstrong girl sets out to uncover the secrets of her new guardians, discovering a world of spells and potions, as well as a mysterious song that could be the key to the family she has always wanted.
