AnoHana Season 2: Director hints at sequel

As part of an event held yesterday for the 10th anniversary of the original anime at Shinjuku Forest 9 Theater, there was a discussion with director Tatsuyuki Nagai, from A-1 Pictures (86 Season 2, The Asterisk War) animation director, and character designer Masayoshi Tanaka, and voice actor Takayuki Kondo, who took on the role of Tetsudou Hisakawa in the series.

According to Nagai, the number of people who came to the event was “amazing”. As he looked around the room, he joked, “There were so many people who wanted to buy tickets that they sold out after five minutes. So they leave us no choice but to make a sequel.”

Afterward, the conversation revolved around the key visual for the anniversary. Tanaka explained that although he had various ideas, such as redraw the characters in their school uniforms, he also had some concerns and ultimately decided to portray the characters as adults in the same setting as in the key visual of the series, as it would be more “emotional”.

“At first, I wanted to draw the characters like in the series or the film. However, I was worried that it didn’t feel special enough for the 10th anniversary. At first, I worked on the visual alone, but … then I thought to myself: ‘Why should I make all this effort on my own?’ So I asked Nagai-san and screenwriter Mari Okada for advice,” Tanaka explained.

Whether there will actually be a sequel to the original anime, So far, a sequel has not been confirmed. The main event for the anniversary is scheduled for August 28, 2021.
