Magical Girl Anime No. 1: Magical Princess Minky Momo
InIn this 1982 series, the young protagonist takes on the role of the daughter of a childless couple. While living with her “parents,” she uses her magical powers to spread love. Her demise in the series, however, is much less magical: Momo, while trying to help a little girl, is hit by a truck and dies.
Magical Girl Anime No. 2: Princess Tutu
A good decade before Madoka, “Princess Tutu” told a dark and tragic story. At the center of this magical girl anime is Ahiru, who wants to help her prince charming with the power of the ballet. The problem here, however, is that Ahiru is in fact a duck for whom death already awaits.
Magical Girl Anime No. 3: Sailor Moon
Fans of the Magical Girl classic “Sailor Moon” know: Bunny and her friends live extremely dangerous lives. On their mission to protect mankind from malicious forces, they also sometimes let their lives. Something that many years later Madoka and her colleagues must also experience and suffer.

The original twelve-part anime “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” aired on Japanese television in the winter of 2011. In 2012, the franchise received two recap films and in 2013, a sequel with the film “Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie – Rebellion”.

Madoka Kaname is a normal high school student. Until one day she meets Homura Akemi, a new classmate, and Kyubey, a magical being. Kyubey tells Madoka and her friend Sayaka Miki that he can grant them any wish. In return, however, they would have to become “Magical Girls,” magicians who hunt down evil witches to help people. While Homura warns them about this pact, they get deeper and deeper into the world of Magical Girls and mischief-bringing witches and begin to understand what it means to be a Magical Girl. Because they live not only dangerous, but also very lonely.
